HUNSUR: JD(S) leader and Vokkaliga strongman GT Devegowda skipped the campaign rally at Hunsur on Saturday attended by party leader and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy.

Devegowda has been cozying up to the BJP for the past few months, hoping it would field his son Harish Gowda and had announced that he would remain neutral without campaigning for anyone in the Hunsur by-poll. But the saffron party gave the ticket to disqualified JDS MLA AH Vishwanath. This has upset Gowda, who has significant clout in the constituency. Vishwanath had won in the 2018 assembly polls with the help of Deve Gowda.

An upset Devegowda has reportedly decided to distance himself from both JD(S) and BJP. There is pressure from his supporters that he should field his son as an independent but sources said the chances are remote.

Devegowda was unhappy with the JD(S) leadership since he was not given a portfolio of his choice in the previous Kumaraswamy government. Since then, he has been praising Yediyurappa, Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.

Vishwanath is hoping he'll extend support to him. BJP MP V Srinivasa Prasad is reportedly convincing Devegowda to support Vishwanath as they all have a common goal - defeating Congress and JD(S).

Making it clear that JD(S) will not have an alliance with any party in the byelection, the party will field someone who has a good chance of winning. Vishwanath, who launched his campaign on Saturday, promised voters he'd ensure that Hunsur gets district status if he's elected.

Earlier, Kumaraswamy accompanied party candidate Somashekar for filing of nomination and addressed a rally.
